Londoner's Diary: We planted pretend information to win votes, says former Tory spinner

Labour’s former chief spinner Alastair Campbell, who now presents himself as a squeaky clear eminence grise of centre-Left politics, feigned outrage at Walshe’s admission. He characterised the ways, and the papers who indulged them, as “a giant a part of the explanation our politics and subsequently our nation is in such a large number.” As Downing Avenue director of communications in 2003, Campbell helped to organize and propagate the Blair authorities’s case for going to conflict in Iraq on the idea of claims that have been later discovered to be false.
