‘Very fascinating’ uncommon forged of Rodin’s The Kiss is up for public sale

Auguste Rodin’s sensual portrayal of tragic lovers caught in an embrace earlier than being killed by a jealous husband is likely one of the world’s most recognised artworks.

The bronze, measuring 60cm excessive, was one of many first three forged on this measurement and has retained the artist’s unique element. It was commissioned in 1904 by the Argentine Jockey Membership to be introduced as a wedding present to Lucien Mérignac, the French fencing world and Olympic champion.

Auctioneering skilled Raphaël Courant admitted he was stunned to find what he described as “a really stunning work, very sensual” in the lounge of a household condo in western France.

“It’s a really fascinating object and it’s more and more uncommon to see this type of work by Rodin outdoors of a museum,” he instructed the Observer.

The bronze, estimated at about €500,000, was forged in France in July 1904 and introduced to Mérignac two months later in Buenos Aires as a becoming image of affection to mark his marriage to Christina Ruiz de Castillo.

Rodin had initially meant to incorporate the ill-fated lovers in his large bronze doorways, The Gates of Hell, commissioned in 1879 by the French authorities for a brand new Paris museum.

The figures are of Paolo and Francesca, tragic lovers from Dante’s narrative poem The Divine Comedy, who have been killed by Francesca’s husband after he caught the Thirteenth-century Italian noblewoman in an embrace along with his personal youthful brother. The Mérignac bronze has a dedication to the fencing champion on its base. Mérignac and his spouse later moved again to France and settled in La Flèche within the west the place he was a fencing teacher on the Prytanée navy college.
