Because the Israel-Gaza struggle grinds on amid a worsening humanitarian disaster, the world’s consideration this week was captured by a battle on the campuses of elite US universities. Professional-Palestine scholar protesters had been arrested en masse by New York Metropolis police on the prestigious Columbia College, prompting outrage that unfold throughout different faculty websites.
Guardian US reporter Erum Salam tells Michael Safi that the scene on Columbia’s campus was one in all orderly drum circles and organised anti-war demonstrations, not the all-out violent chaos which may have been imagined.
