‘The Arctic has a form of magic’: Huw Lewis-Jones’s finest cellphone picture

Dr Huw Lewis-Jones is an expedition chief throughout the polar areas. The tutorial, who teaches at Falmouth College in Cornwall, has now travelled to the north pole 12 instances, and this picture was taken in 2018, “excessive within the Arctic Ocean, north of the Franz Josef Land archipelago, within the frozen pack ice”.

The polar bear Lewis-Jones captured along with his iPhone 7 was looking for seals, which haul themselves out on to the floe or come up within the respiration holes. The bear was testing their ship, too: “They’re usually actually curious. This stunning animal stayed with us for over an hour.”

Lewis-Jones makes use of his iPhone as a sketchbook on his expeditions, near and much from residence. “It’s splendid for recording reminiscences and insights, which later gas the writing of my books after I’ve left the ice behind,” he says. “And after I’m truly driving the boat, it’s a useful digicam for a fast shot.”

Reflecting on his picture a number of years later makes him pine to be again. “I really feel like I thrive up there,” he says. “The Arctic has been part of my life for many years. It’s a pleasure and a privilege to be out in these troublesome environments. Nowadays I spend a lot of my time instructing and writing, however I’m nonetheless fortunate sufficient to steer voyages annually. Whether or not they’re to seek out seabirds, distant islands, polar bears or just see the wilderness of ice, it’s all a form of magic to me.”
