From tales about freebies and donors to anger over winter gas fee cuts, Labour’s first months in energy have been surprisingly rocky. And alongside these headlines have been rumours that inside Downing Avenue issues aren’t any smoother, because of the facility wrestle between two of Starmer’s prime aides: Morgan McSweeney, head of technique, and Sue Grey, chief of employees.
Jessica Elgot, the Guardian’s deputy political editor, says there have been rows over entry to Starmer, with complaints that Grey was too controlling over his time. And ultimately she grew to become a lightening rod for the criticism that Labour’s message was getting misplaced within the noise across the dangerous press. Jess says some Labour insiders believed “in the event you had been telling the story proper there’s rather a lot to say, however one way or the other all we’re speaking about is infighting in Downing Avenue”.
Now Grey has gone and Starmer has reshuffled his workforce, Helen Pidd asks: is something more likely to change? And with a tricky funds looming, can a brand new story concerning the authorities’s goal be informed?
