Air site visitors controller reported seeing a ‘fireball’ when American Airways jet collided with helicopter close to Reagan Airport: ‘Then it was gone’


Audio from Air Visitors Management captures the second the flight security company reported the horrific mid-air collision between an American Airways jet and a Blackhawk army helicopter.

“It was most likely out within the center river. I simply noticed a fireball after which it was gone,” the air site visitors controller will be heard on audio shared on X.

“I haven’t seen something since they hit the river. Nevertheless it was CRJ and a helicopter that hit, I might say, perhaps a half mile off the method into 33,” the controller says in a name to Hearth Command.
