Phil Lesh, the influential bassist of the Grateful Lifeless who powered lots of the jam band’s touring incarnations after the 1995 loss of life of Jerry Garcia, has died. He was 84.
Lesh’s loss of life was introduced on his Instagram web page. “Phil Lesh, bassist and founding member of The Grateful Lifeless, handed peacefully this morning,” the caption reads. “He was surrounded by his household and full of affection. Born on 15 March 1940 in Berkeley, California, Lesh was a pupil of classical music all through childhood. A skilled trumpet participant, he studied with the avant garde composer Luciano Berio and performed with minimalist composer Steve Reich. He switched to bass – an instrument he had by no means performed – in 1965 after he was recruited by the Warlocks, a band fronted by his buddy Garcia, for a present at a pizzeria in Menlo Park, California.
