On the buses: glimpses of passing commuters in wet London – in footage

In October 2005, BBC presenter Steve Madden was standing in Shaftesbury Avenue when he noticed a girl on the 38 bus, her determine framed by the misted-up window, which mirrored the lights from the road. He took a snapshot and, years later, struck by an analogous scene, he had the concept for a images sequence. Between January 2017 and March 2020, he waited for chilly, wet evenings, then stationed himself in varied places round London to {photograph} commuters seen via the bus home windows. “I used to be trying to find the wonder within the half-obscured passengers,” he says. “It’s a mixture of fleeting glimpses into folks’s lives and the unusual, unpredictable shapes they make behind the condensation.”
