“Give me my gin, you little shit!” It’s a task that solely Charlotte Rampling might play: a veteran warfare photographer well-known for her adventuring, bravery and arduous ingesting. Now virtually aged, in poor health and maybe afraid of being alone, Ruth has flown from England to New Zealand to stick with her son. The little shit is her teenage grandson Sam (George Ferrier), lately expelled from college. He’s grieving the loss of life of his mum and isn’t finest happy to be left alone in the home with Ruth. “I’m not taking care of that outdated bitch.”

There’s a scene during which a physician advises Ruth to have a catheter fitted. She replies archly: “What if I meet somebody, we have now just a few drinks, and …?” She leaves the ultimate bit hanging, having fun with watching the physician squirm as he explains she should chorus from intercourse. In one other she catches a glimpse of herself in a mirror. “I’ve nonetheless acquired it” – and boy does Ramping nonetheless have it, in spades.
