Pierre Krahenbuhl was accused of spending UN cash to take his married girlfriend touring

The Crimson Cross introduced on Friday that Pierre Krahenbuhl will take over as director-general of the group. Krahenbuhl beforehand led the UN’s company for Palestinian refugees till he was ousted amid allegations of sexual misconduct, nepotism, and different abuses of authority.

“The Meeting of the Worldwide Committee of the Crimson Cross (ICRC) has appointed Pierre Krahenbuhl because the group’s subsequent director-general,” it stated in an announcement. “He’s acknowledged as a strategic and purpose-driven chief with deep organizational expertise and dedication to the ICRC.”

Krahenbuhl, a Swiss nationwide, has labored with the ICRC since 1991, and oversaw the group’s response to armed conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, and different international locations. He was appointed commissioner-general of the UN Aid and Works Company for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in 2014.

The UNRWA launched an inner investigation into alleged misconduct by Krahenbuhl in 2019. As commissioner-general, Krahenbuhl was accused of inventing a job for his married girlfriend and utilizing company funds to take her on work journeys with him.

The scandal exacerbated a funding disaster at UNRWA, because the US and UK dramatically lower their contributions to the company. Krahenbuhl resigned, and was subsequently cleared of most wrongdoing.

Chatting with Swiss media following his resignation, Krahenbuhl claimed that he was a “sufferer of soiled politics,” and blamed an unnamed US official for ginning up the allegations to drive him out of the company.

On the time, the Israeli authorities and the administration of former US President Donald Trump had been accusing UNRWA of anti-Israel “politicization.”
