Guantanamo’s highest-value detainee and the guard who befriended him

One night in November 2001, {an electrical} engineer named Mohamedou Ould Salahi was visited at his dwelling in Mauritania by plainclothes intelligence officers. They needed him for questioning. Salahi was taken from Mauritania first to Jordan, then to Afghanistan, and at last to the Guantánamo Bay detention facility in Cuba, the place he can be held with out cost for 14 years – an expertise he wrote about in his 2015 memoir Guantánamo Diary, which has now been tailored into a movie, The Mauritanian.

Within the first of two episodes about his story, Salahi tells Anushka Asthana concerning the torture he skilled in detention, and the sequence of occasions that introduced him underneath suspicion within the first place. Salahi’s former guard Steve Wooden describes how he fashioned an unlikely friendship with Guantánamo’s most high-value detainee, and displays on how that friendship led him to query his job and the complete “struggle on terror”.
