European Parliament approves sanctions on Turkey over reopening of Cyprus city

MEPs have adopted an modification calling on the European Council to impose sanctions on Turkey, after they unanimously voted to sentence its current “unilateral and unlawful” habits in Cyprus and the encircling territorial waters.

The modification was submitted by the European Individuals’s Celebration, a center-right group led by European Council President Donald Tusk, and calls on the EU to “keep its unified place vis-a-vis unilateral and unlawful actions by Turkey” by imposing strict sanctions towards the nation.

The choice comes after Turkey’s makes an attempt to reopen Varosha, a seashore resort that was deserted in Cyprus after the 1974 Turkish invasion. Ankara claims that Northern Cyprus is its territory, whereas it’s internationally acknowledged as Cypriot land that’s illegally occupied.
