Alleged Russian spy denies understanding of ‘honeytrap’ plan to focus on journalist

An alleged Russian spy tearfully informed the Previous Bailey she knew nothing of plans to deploy her as a “honeytrap” and claimed she was “lied to, manipulated, used, and uncovered”.

London-based Vanya Gaberova, 30, is accused of being a part of a spy ring which focused folks and locations of curiosity to the Russian state over three years.

The prosecutor Alison Morgan KC requested what she understood she was doing when she initially befriended Grozev on Fb.

Dzhambazov, from Harrow, north-west London, and Roussev, 46, from Nice Yarmouth, Norfolk, have admitted plotting to spy for Russia between 2020 and 2023.

Fellow Bulgarians Gaberova, her ex-boyfriend Tihomir Ivanchev, 39, of Acton, west London, and Ivanova, from Harrow, have denied involvement.

The courtroom has heard how Gaberova was charmed by Dzhambazov in Valencia and left her boyfriend Ivanchev, unaware the older Dzhambazov was nonetheless together with his accomplice, Ivanova.

Jurors considered extracts of the previous aggressive swimmer Ivanchev’s police interviews, through which Morgan steered he had tried to throw Gaberova “beneath a bus” to save lots of himself.

He blamed Gaberova for getting him concerned, accused her of “manipulating” him and claimed she was used as a “protect” by Dzhambazov, jurors heard.

Morgan stated Ivanchev’s account was “nonsense”, asking: “Are you aware the expression ‘throwing somebody beneath the bus’?

“He’s attempting to place you in it to save lots of himself, isn’t he?
